Since autumn 2023, bluetongue (BT) has been widespread in ruminants in Central Europe. The viral disease is very costly and causes, among other things, miscarriages in pregnant animals and impairments that are reflected in the statistics as a greatly increased mortality rate. There are reports that in certain European regions the number of animals dying by themselves is two to three times higher than normal due to BT. Cattle and other ruminants can survive an infection with BT, but their productivity will decrease.

For Johanna and Gerrit Arendse, Hof Arendse-Peters GbR in Lower Saxony, BT has confirmed the importance of precise mineral allocation for the immune status of cows. Since they started precise mineral allocation, they have registered a fifth fewer cases of disease in dairy cows, in addition to improvements in cell count, reproduction and performance.
